Rules & paddle legality

Official rules, paddle approval, and ban-related updates that can affect tournament play.

Two bodies decide legality

Approval by one body does not guarantee approval by the other — where you play decides which list to check.

USA Pickleball (USAP)

Amateur & sanctioned play

Governs Nationals, regional, and local sanctioned events. Tests dimensions, materials, surface grit (spin), and PBCoR — the rebound or “trampoline” power limit.

Live database: equipment.usapickleball.org

UPA-A

The pro tours (PPA & MLP)

Certifies equipment for the PPA Tour and MLP with independent, stricter lab testing for power, spin, and post-break-in changes.

Paddle legality watch

Paddle statuses were verified on 2026-06-26 from official and reputable sources and can change daily — always confirm on the official database before you compete. USAP (amateur) and UPA-A (pro) certify separately.

2026 rule changes

Effective January 1, 2026 — mostly clarifications that close gray areas, summarised in our own words.

Scoring

Rally scoring: a point is a point

In approved rally-scoring formats the game-winning point no longer has to be won on serve — either side can win the deciding rally, so big comebacks stay alive.

Serve

Volley serve must be “clear”

The word “clearly” was added to all three volley-serve requirements — clearly below the waist, paddle head clearly below the wrist, a clear upward arc — giving referees more room to fault borderline serves. A tennis-style toss-and-hit serve was rejected again.

Serve

Spin on the serve, clarified

You can spin the ball through paddle contact on the serve; you cannot pre-spin it with your hand before contact.

Faults

A visible spare ball is a fault

A spare ball that is visible during a live rally — even peeking from a pocket — is now a fault, to stop it from distracting opponents.

Line calls

Out calls must be prompt

An out call has to be made promptly — before the opponent strikes the ball or before it becomes dead — otherwise play continues.

Conduct

Stronger conduct enforcement

Referees can warn or issue a technical foul before the match (including warm-up), asking the crowd for help on a line call is penalized, and there is clearer authority to eject players for violence or venue damage.

Inclusion

Adaptive Standing Division formalized

A formal Adaptive Standing Division and clearer wheelchair rules were added — a wheelchair counts as part of the body, and eligible adaptive players may use a two-bounce allowance.

Check before you buy or compete

  1. 1
    Match the exact model name

Thickness, shape, and version letters (14/16mm, elongated, Pro/Power) all have to match exactly.

  2. 2
    Search the right database

USAP for amateur and sanctioned events; UPA-A for PPA and MLP pro divisions.

  3. 3
    Re-check right before the event

Statuses can change daily and a removed paddle means forfeiture — screenshot the listing with the date.
