What the DUPR self-check is
The DUPR self-check is a quick, court-based quiz. In ten situations you choose a shot, a power level, and a target, and we estimate the pickleball level your decisions point to. It takes a couple of minutes and needs no account.
It is built to test shot selection — the choices that separate levels — rather than how hard you can hit. There are no trick questions; pick what you would actually do on court.
Official DUPR vs the Picklary self-check
- Official DUPR is calculated from the scores of real matches you log, on one scale for all players. It is the number used to seed tournaments and build fair games.
- The Picklary self-check is only an estimate from your shot choices. It does not log matches and is not affiliated with DUPR; use it to find a starting point while you learn the system.

What each level feels like
These are general skill descriptions, not official cut-offs. The self-check points you to the band that best matches your decisions.
- Level 2.5 — developing consistency: you can sustain short rallies and are learning the kitchen, serve, and return.
- Level 3.0 — reliable rallies: dependable serve and return, beginning to use the third-shot drop and to dink with some control.
- Level 3.5 — shot selection under pressure: steadier drops, dinks, and resets, better court position, and fewer unforced errors.
- Level 4.0 — advanced strategy: you control pace, mix drives and drops, stay patient at the kitchen, and target deliberately.
How to use your result
Use the estimate to decide what to practise next, not to label yourself. If the quiz nudged you toward soft shots or resets, that is your cue.
- Open your level pathway and read the band just above yours.
- Drill the fundamentals: dinking and the third-shot drop.
- Then log real matches to build an actual DUPR rating.
Frequently asked questions
Is this an official DUPR rating?
No. The self-check estimates a level from the shots you choose in ten situations. A real DUPR rating is calculated from your logged match results at dupr.com.
How accurate is it?
It reflects decision-making, not match results, so treat it as a friendly starting point rather than a precise number.
How many questions are there?
Ten court situations each time, drawn at random from a larger pool, with the difficulty adapting to your answers.
Will my result change if I retake it?
It can. Scenarios are drawn randomly and adapt, so retaking may shift the estimate a little.
What level should a beginner expect?
New players often land around 2.0 to 2.5. The description of the band matters more than the exact number.
How do I move up a level?
Train the skills for your band. The level pages and guides like dinking and the third-shot drop show what to work on next.
Does a higher number mean I am better?
It reflects your shot selection in these scenarios. Real improvement shows up in matches over time.
Reminder: this is an estimate of shot selection, not an official DUPR rating. Real DUPR comes from logged matches at dupr.com.
